The Glasgow Conservatives have now confirmed the candidates who will be fighting the six seats across the city at the UK General Election on the 4th of July.
Current council group leader Thomas Kerr will stand in Glasgow East and former Calton councillor Robert Connolly was selected for the Glasgow North East seat. Former Scottish Parliamentary candidate and lawyer Haroun Malik will fight the Glasgow South seat. Standing in Glasgow West is Faten Hameed who has made the city her home after moving from Iraq over three decades ago, with her children going to Jordanhill School. Well-known local shopkeeper Mamun-Ur-Rashid MBE has been selected for the new Glasgow South West seat which includes his home community of Govan. Finally, Naveed Asghar - who has a successful background in business and communications and is chair of the Glasgow Conservative association - has been selected in Glasgow North. Candidates have spoken of their "honour" and "delight" at being selected and say they will be taking a "positive" message to voters across Glasgow.
Scottish Conservative and Unionist Glasgow West candidate Faten Hameed said: "I am honoured to be standing in the Glasgow West seat in the General Election. I have made this city my home since moving over three decades ago and I am passionate about improving our communities. For too long both SNP and Labour politicians have let down this area. I will always put local people first and focus on their real priorities such as standing up for the success of Jordanhill school, protecting vital local services, and creating good jobs."
Scottish Conservative and Unionist Glasgow North candidate Naveed Asghar said: "I am delighted to be standing in the Glasgow North seat. I was born and bred in the West End and my children are at schools in the area. These communities mean a lot to me and I want them to fulfil their potential. I have a positive message for voters in Glasgow North. It is about focusing on what really matters to them like investing in local infrastructure, keeping our communities safe from crime, and standing up for struggling businesses, rather than a SNP MP who will only be focused on their independence obsession."
Scottish Conservative and Unionist Glasgow South West candidate Mamun-Ur-Rashid MBE said: "It is a real privilege to have been selected by the party for Glasgow South West. As a local shopkeeper and someone who cares deeply about this area, I have already been fighting for people who live and work here for over 30 years. It would be incredible to be fighting for them as their local MP. I would fight day and night for Glasgow South West and I am looking forward to meeting voters in the coming weeks to hear what matters to them."
