Glasgow Conservative group leader Thomas Kerr says it would be “shameful” if the UK Labour Government failed to deliver on £15 million of earmarked funding for Drumchapel.
Thomas has urged Scottish Secretary Ian Murray to “come clean” after it was reported that money committed by the previous UK Conservative government for communities across Scotland would now be under review. The UK Conservative government had pledged £15 million for Drumchapel as part of their levelling up agenda, which would help to transform the town centre, deliver new housing and also improve transport connections and enhance local community facilities. However, Ian Murray has described the funding as “headline-grabbing gimmicks”, leading Councillor Kerr to fear that the “much-needed” investment from Drumchapel will be axed.
He says that would be a “hammer blow” for Drumchapel and any removal of the funding would be a “betrayal” of the local community by Labour. Thomas added that the Glasgow Conservatives will fight “tooth and nail” to keep the £15 million funding in place and stand up for local residents in Drumchapel, who have been forgotten for far too long by the SNP and Labour.
Glasgow Conservative group leader Thomas Kerr said: “It was terrific news when the previous UK Conservative government committed to £15 million of levelling up funding for Drumchapel. The area had been overlooked for far too long by SNP and Labour politicians and was crying out for investment. My Conservative colleagues stepped up and pledged millions that would help to transform the town centre and improving housing and transport links through this funding.
It would be shameful if the new UK Labour government failed to deliver on this and axed this funding. Ian Murray has said cash earmarked for levelling up projects are under review so he needs to come clean on what this means for Drumchapel. Losing out on the £15 million would be a hammer blow from this area. After the Conservatives championed Drumchapel, this would be a betrayal by Labour. Alongside my Conservative colleagues, I will fight tooth and nail to keep this £15 million in place and ensure that the area will reap the benefits in the years ahead.”
